What makes someone an animal behaviourist?
Unfortunately, anyone can claim to be an animal behaviourist, dog psychologist or canine "whisperer". Many have little or no knowledge of learning theory, applied animal behaviour, ethology or behaviour modification.
Many individuals who claim to be behaviour "experts" may have completed a short course in animal behaviour (usually over the internet by distance learning) over a few weeks or months and are accredited by an individual or organisation rather than academic accreditation.
A qualified behaviourist is trained to at least degree level and either has CCAB after their name or belong to a professional body (an APBC member for example). The Animal and Behaviour and Training Council (ABTC) monitors standards of professional competence within the practice of animal behaviour therapy and training. Practitioners are registered via membership in a professional organisation, such as the APBC.
Some of the behavioural issues covered:
- Aggression towards people and dogs
- Attachment issues and generalised anxiety
- Fear, phobias and nervousness
- House soiling
- Car problems
- Obsessive compulsive disorders
What to expect:
- Consultations last 1½ - 2 hours in the privacy of the owner's home.
- A detailed case history is taken and the pet's temperament is assessed.
- We will devise a treatment programme based on scientific methods.
- The owners are provided with a written report. A report is also sent to the referring veterinary surgeon.
- Generally only one session is needed. All follow-up advice is freely available by phone or email.
- Additional visits are available at a reduced fee.
We take a holistic approach, looking at diet, family dynamics, lifestyle and relationships. All treatment methods are kind, scientifically proven and do not compromise the animal's welfare.
Available on veterinary referral
Some behavioural problems are physiologically based.
No qualified behaviourist will use punitive methods or rely on outdated "dominance" theories in their practice.
